Most people purchase insurance for their home or automobile from “direct writers”, insurance companies that sell directly to the public. These “direct writers” and their agents have a vested interest in this process… their own. Direct writers sell only their company's policies and therefore, are primarily concerned with their ability to profit from the insurance they sell you. This means that covering fewer claims and limiting the amount they pay when they do pay a claim is their primary goal. While their policies may sometimes appear inexpensive, how do you know you if the coverage they offer is best for you or them? Who takes your side when claim problems or disputes arise? The problem with buying insurance from direct writers is that you have no advocate representing your interests in the transaction. You may think that the term “independent agent” means just that. Many people often refer to an independent agent as “their agent”. In actuality, an independent agent is, by legal contract, an agent of the insurance company (or companies) they represent and not the insurance buyer. Typically, most so called “independent” agents represent just a few insurance companies and their income is critically dependent upon their continued positive relationship with those companies.
